Disadvantages and Advantages

What are some good and bad?

Every job has its weaknesses including an Anesthesiologist. Three disadvantages are:

  1. Having a relatively repetitive job - unlike a surgeon or even a family doctor. the fundamental purpose of the job is the same and that is administering anesthesia in some sort of way and monitoring the patient.

  2. Being on call - since an Anesthesiologist is so important to a critical health person, He/she must be on anesthesia to go into surgery and regain their health. This is why the Anesthesiologist needs to be at the hospital or work location when the patient needs them. This means being called in for work during the night or morning.

  3. Not getting the limelight - although the Anesthesiologist is one of the most important positions in the operating room, the doctor does not get the gratitude that other doctors get like the main surgeon does. This is largely due to the fact that when the patient is awake from sleep, he/she does not get a chance to ever meet the doctor again.

Although there are disadvantages to the job, the advantages much outweigh the disadvantages. These advantages are:

  1. Excellent pay – Anesthesiologist have one of the highest salaries of any medical profession. Its average salary beats many maximum salaries.

  2. Variety of patients – since an Anesthesiologist works with many patients every day, he/she gets to see or work on many different patients young or old, male or female. This creates a very vivid and lively work environment were the environment is different everyday making the work or career a very happy one.

  3. Fewer complications – since the doctor's fundamental goal is to administer anesthesia and monitor the patient’s health, the doctor does not have to worry about other complications that other physicians even the surgeon has to deal with. These include post-operative swelling and problematic infections.
