After getting the undergraduate degree, the next step is four years of medical school to receive a degree in medicine or M.D. The first two years of medical school builds on the students' undergraduate knowledge of the natural sciences. The last two years are dedicated to clinical study. The students will then take part in 4-12 week clinical rotations that will be their on-the-job introduction to various branches of medicine, such as pediatrics, geriatrics, oncology and anesthesiology. Known as interns, these students operate under the supervision of attending physicians or residents.

After medical school, a four-year resident training program is required. The first year may be either a medical or surgical internship, The next three years will be intense training in anesthesiology making it a co-operative learning program.
